Herbie the Love Bug became a national sensation beginning in 1968 with the last movie produced in 2005. Here are a few fun facts about the beloved VW Beetle star.

1. The Movies: The original Herbie the Love Bug was a comedy released by Disney in 1968. The movie was such a hit it spawned 5 sequels. Subsequent films include Herbie Rides Again, Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo, Herbie Goes Bananas, The Love Bug (1997), and Herbie: Fully Loaded.

2. Starring: Dean Jones (played Jim), Michelle Lee (played Carol), Buddy Hackett and David Tomlinson starred in the original movie. Herbie wanted Jim and Carol to fall in love. With some help from Herbie, they eventually did.

3. Style: A 1963 white beetle, Herbie wore red, white and blue racing stripes from front to back bumper and sported a large racing-style “54” decal on its hood, doors and engine cover. Actually, about 100 cars total starred in the various movies and TV appearances some with slight variations in detail.

4. Personality: Herbie is known to have had a mind of his own and was able to drive by himself, preferably in races where he displayed his devil-may-care California roots. Not only did Herbie have intellect but he talked, too!

The Detroit Auto Show just wrapped up last week and Volkswagen was there. In addition to the new 2012 Beetle, two Beetle concept cars were displayed, the E-Bugster and the Fender Beetle. Also on display was a hybrid version of the Jetta compact sedan. The E-Bugster and Jetta are highly fuel efficient vehicles, demonstrating Volkswagen’s response for the growing demand for low fuel consumption cars.

The E-Bugster is an all-electric, lithium ion battery run Beetle that is free of emissions. A two-seater with larger wheels than the 2012 Beetle, this car has can move at 114 Horsepower for up to 100 miles!

The hybrid Jetta will go on sale later in 2012 with a turbocharged gasoline engine and electric motor, said to use 20% less fuel. The new Jetta will get about 45 miles per gallon with plenty of power, going from zero to 60 mph in just over 8 seconds. In Detroit, Volkswagen once again demonstrated the cutting-edge engineering and design technology that propelled them to one of the leading automobile brands in the world. Volkswagen to Build SUV in Chattanooga?

According to the German newspaper, Financial Times Deutschland, Volkswagen is making plans to bolster production at its Chattanooga, Tennessee plant with a new sport utility vehicle.

The new vehicle, to be launched in 2015, would have three rows of seats and offer more room than its Tiguan SUV. Reports are that the vehicle would also be less expensive than the larger Touareg SUV.

Although there has been no confirmation from Volkswagen of America or the Chattanooga plant, SUV’s of this size are popular among American families who need the three rows of seating. Mike Smith of Strong Volkswagen responded to the possibility of the new SUV, “The proposed SUV would be a welcome addition to our Volkswagen fleet. Larger families need more options when it comes to SUV’s.” An announcement is expected in 2012 and we’ll let you know when we hear more news.

Veteran’s Day was proclaimed as November 11 by President Wilson in 1919 in honor of the one year anniversary of Armistice Day, the day fighting in World War I ceased. The recognition at that time was specifically for those who died in the service of the country in World War I.

Throughout the years, the Act creating Veteran’s Day has been revised a number of times so that today it is broadly regarded as a day to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of American freedom as well as those who served or are serving their country in any one of the branches of the military. The 5 branches include the Air Force, the Navy, the Marines, the Army and the Coast Guard.

Often accompanied by parades and other celebrations including the laying of the wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery, Veterans Day is a federal holiday. VW to be the Top Automaker Worldwide in 2011?

Estimates are that Volkswagen may become the largest automaker in the world this year, topping General Motors and Toyota. The reason: an increase in sales in emerging markets. VW sales in China alone have increased 20 percent and in India, there has been a 50 percent boost in sales. The Chinese market is projected to be even larger next year.

All three contenders have seen a decrease in the European market, although Volkswagen’s reduction was a mere 3.3 percent compared with GM and Toyota at 34 percent and 20 percent drops, respectively. Volkswagen sales in the U.S have been strong.

Sales projections are mixed for 2012, but it is anticipated that Volkswagen will stay in the first position, outselling Toyota by 50,000 units. Estimates on sales were obtained from J.D. Power and Associates, HIS Automotive and PwC Autofacts. Source: Bloomberg News October 24, 2011.

Boo! Is that a VW Bus?

Is this a great Halloween costume or what! Or maybe, just maybe . . .

After making its debut at the Geneva and New York Auto Shows, many Volkswagen enthusiasts are hopeful about the Bulli concept car. Based on the original Volkswagen Bus/Van designs, anticipation about its future release increased after the Bulli won the 2011 Concept Truck of the Year Award at the tenth annual North American Concept Vehicle of the Year Awards in June.

There are similarities to the hippie-era VW bus such as the two-tone paint, three-person bench seat in the front, and a pronounced VW insignia on the front of the car. But there are some pretty striking differences, too. The concept bus has an electric motor! It can go up to 186.4 miles on one battery charge, and touch-screen technology is used for entertainment and climate control, in the form of an iPad. There are rumors of other engine models including gasoline, diesel and hybrid options. Strong VW will be sure to give you the latest as we learn more about the future of the Bulli.

Strong Volkswagen is a long-time supporter of Utah athletics. They and Strong Audi are members of the University of Utah Crimson Club. Owners of both Strong VW and Strong Audi have provided vehicles to football coaching staff through the Ute Car Program. This program includes the use of vehicles for University of Utah coaches and administrators, a valuable resource when recruiting and attending University events throughout the state.

In football, the Utes have won an amazing 10 of the last 12 Bowl games they played in. This Saturday is their first Pac 12 home game. Go Utes! Ute men’s basketball and women’s gymnastics are Strong VW favorites as well.

My 1969 Volkswagen: Remembering the Days

My first car, when I turned 16, was a 1969 baby blue Volkswagen Beetle. Oh what lovely times I had in that car. The poor thing stuck with me as I learned to drive a manual transmission, including crunching gears and faulty starts, but I learned the tricks of releasing the clutch and pressing on the gas pedal like a pro in no time flat.

That Volkswagen drove well in the snow and the desert. I took it to the ski slopes, the red rocks of Southern Utah, and to the "big cities" like Salt Lake and Las Vegas – what fun! Skipping classes, friends and I would “drag main” in our little Utah town which took around 10 minutes in heavy traffic. Or we'd drive along dirt roads in the fields and foothills to look at deer and other wildlife with the radio volume turned up and the windows down. Scared most of them away!
